English summary: In this volume the byzantinist Klaus-Peter Todt and the orientalist Bernd Andreas Vest present the results of their many years of research into the historical geography of the Byzantine region of Syria (corresponding to the present-day central and northern Syria, south eastern Turkey and northern Lebanon) from the 3rd to the early 14th century AD. Their work is based mainly on Greek, Latin, Syriac, Arabic and Armenian written sources as well as on documentation of the architectural legacy (ruined cities, Crusader castles, churches and monasteries). The work contains an extensive introduction to the geography, history (including social, cultural and religious history), demography, economy and logistics of the region, followed by detailed research results for each of the individual locations in the form of almost 2,000 lemmas. An exhaustive index makes the abundance of material accessible. Research results are also illustrated on two maps (in print and on CD). The work is aimed at all those searching for in-depth and detailed background information about the Middle East, along with historians, Byzantine scholars, scholars of Middle Eastern Studies, archaeologists and art historians.
